Hi folks— Everyone involved in these efforts worked very hard—congrats to the Library boards, Friends/Foundation and volunteers in Pawling, Hudson and New Paltz. All three libraries won their budget proposition votes.
- In Pawling, we rebranded and ran an aggressive vote yes campaign to increase their local funding from $170,000 to $390,000. We won with 68% of the vote (874 yes/411 no).
- In Hudson, we ran an aggressive vote yes campaigns in both the City of Hudson and the Town of Greenport. We won handily in Hudson increasing local funding from $48,000 to $120,000. We won with 67% of the vote—405 yes/191no. But it seems the folks in the Town of Greenport couldn’t swing another $2.54 a year for an extra $11,000 in local funding. We lost there by 18 votes (414 yes/432 no—49% to 51%) but there are still absentee ballots to be counted.
- In New Paltz, we consulted with the folks from Elting Memorial Library who just opened a newly renovated library but needed more local funding to keep the place up and running to meet the community’s need. I’m happy to say that after following our advice and our campaign formula, Elting won with close to 60% of the vote (1,131 yes/661 no).
All in all, this has been a good year for our libraries—out of 7 votes we won 6! Now on to our other library projects around the state. --Libby P.S. We’ll soon be launching our monthly Communication Services e-mail newsletter. Watch your inboxes! |

Hi folks— After 4 months of incredibly hard work by the board and staff of the Finkelstein Memorial Library in Spring Valley, we won the library’s budget vote tonight with a whopping 70% of the vote. The unofficial results (4 voting machines but no absentee ballots) the totals were 1909 in favor and 822 against. This is a great victory since the library’s budget went down last year by 180 votes amid some stiff opposition from the local Chasidic community. The strategy was simple—direct mail, community outreach, phone banking, voter ID and Get Out the Vote! Victory is sweet! --Libby
